BC, a leader in residential packaging and paper product recycling in British Columbia, has announced its support for Samsara Materials, a company pioneering sustainable building solutions by incorporating waste plastics into construction materials. This partnership aligns with Recycle BC’s mission to foster innovation in recycling technology and create local circular economies, helping advance Samsara’s application to the CleanBC Plastics Action Fund.
Samsara Materials has been researching ways to convert difficult-to-recycle flexible plastic waste into durable building materials, such as pavement bricks. Flexible plastics, known for their lightweight and multi-laminated structures, pose unique recycling challenges. Recycle BC currently processes over 3,600 tonnes of flexible plastics annually, collected through its curbside and depot services. By supporting Samsara, Recycle BC seeks to expand its recycling capabilities and find viable new uses for these challenging materials.
In addition to endorsing Samsara’s project, Recycle BC is contributing $50,000 in financial support to further the development and scaling of this innovative solution. Sam Baker, VP of Operations at Recycle BC, highlighted the importance of such partnerships: “Having local, trusted, and symbiotic relationships is critical to a successful and sustainable economy. We look forward to working with Samsara to advance local capacity for plastics recycling and to create alternative, viable end markets.”
This collaboration not only promises to improve the recycling of flexible plastics but also aims to set a new standard for sustainable construction, creating a pathway for local circular economies and promoting environmental responsibility.
